The true, original YOLO, and actually a part of the longer quote, “Carpe diem quam minimum credula postero – ‘Seize the day, putting as little trust as possible in the future’–which, at least according to Wikipedia, really has something more to do with not letting perfectly good wine go to waste. Come to think of it, maybe good ol’ Horace would approve of our modern-day bastardization of his iconic phrase.

2. “Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today.”
-James Dean, 1931-1955
*Honorable mention: “Live fast, die young.” -John Derek, 1949
Ignoring the likely possibility that his espoused philosophy probably played a part in his untimely death (similar to all those young’uns tweeting ‘#YOLO’ as they climbed shit-faced into the front seat of an automobile), this quote is still undeniably poetic. A worthy successor to “Carpe Diem” if there ever was one.
3. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop to look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

This one I’ll admit i’m only including because ’80s Matthew Broderick. It’s more of a tip than a motto. Moving on…
4. “Hakuna Matata.”
-Timon and Pumbaa, 1994
“It means no worries / for the rest of your days / It’s a problem free / philosophy / Hakuna Matataaaa…”
This phrase basically meant you could run away from home, live in lush oasis in the middle of the desert, and eat bugs for the rest of your life–which were not gross, btw, but “slimy and satisfying.” What’s not to love?
5. “Thug Lyfe.”
-Everyone, circa 2010
I personally miss this one most. Being eighteen years old, running red lights or making illegal u-turns and yelling “thug lyfeeee” definitely made me feel like kind of a badass, not gonna lie. Can we bring it back plz? Cool, thnx.
